In one of the most anticipated events of the 2004 Olympic Games, world champion and record holder Ian Thorpe seeks redemption after a disappointing second place in his own backyard in Sydney 4 years earlier. In his path, the reigning Olympic champion and first man to swim the 100m free under 48 seconds; Pieter van den Hoogenband. Notables on deck: king of long distances races and former world record holder in the distance Grant Hackett and a young American teenager named Michael Phelps!!!
Beginner tip: Excellent display of technique; elbows high, arms fully extended to start the stroke, shoulder rotation.
Intermediate tip: Underwater cameras are a good chance to check the movement of the arms. Use forearm surface area to pull (pectorals working), push arms inwards (lats working), finish it strong (triceps working).
Advanced tip: Fly kick after the start and flip turns (upper body steady, all about abs and legs).
